5 Marketing Tips for Artisans Who Hate Marketing

You became a maker to create, not to write Instagram captions. Here are five simple, practical tips to market your craft without feeling salesy.

You're a Maker, Not a Marketer — And That's OK

Most artisans I know would rather spend all day in their studio than figure out what to post on Instagram. But here's the truth: if nobody knows your work exists, nobody can buy it.

The good news? Marketing doesn't have to mean becoming a pushy salesperson. It just means helping the right people find your work.

1. Tell Your Story

People don't just buy a product — they buy the story behind it. Share why you started, what inspires you, and how you make your pieces. A photo of your messy studio with a caption about your process will out-perform a polished product shot every time.

2. Pick One Platform and Own It

Don't try to be everywhere. If you love visual storytelling, go all-in on Instagram. If you prefer writing, start a blog. If video is your thing, TikTok or YouTube. Master one before adding another.

3. Document, Don't Create

Instead of "I need to create content," think "I'll document my day." Photograph your work in progress. Share what went wrong. Show the finished piece. This removes the pressure and gives you authentic content your audience will love.

4. Build an Email List

Social media platforms come and go, but your email list is yours forever. Start collecting emails now — even just a sign-up sheet at your next market booth. A list of 100 engaged subscribers is worth more than 10,000 random followers.

5. Be Consistent, Not Perfect

Post three times a week, every week, with okay content. That beats posting once a month with "perfect" content. Consistency builds trust, and trust builds sales.
